As one of the earliest institutions in China to perform cardiac surgery and a recognized leader in the field, the department records 42,000 outpatient visits and over 5,000 surgical procedures annually, covering coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, aortic dissection, end-stage heart failure, and all types of congenital heart disease. In 2025, the department ranked among the top ten nationally in total heart transplant volume and third nationwide in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantations.
Advantages & Clinical Features
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
Minimally invasive procedures account for nearly 50% of all operations. Minimally invasive valve surgery represents over 90% of valve procedures. Off-pump minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting accounts for over 75% of all CABG procedures. The complex David, Bentall, and Commando procedures are performed via minimally invasive intercostal approach — leading the world.
“Xi’an Jiaotong Procedure” for Aortic Dissection
Over 900 aortic procedures annually, with more than 500 for type A aortic dissection (third-highest-volume center in China). A dedicated green channel for critical and emergency patients ensures highly efficient treatment. This innovative technique has been adopted by over 100 centers nationwide and internationally.
